The Fronsac Mad mixed case includes the following:
Château Fontenil – 2016 – 3x75cl bottles
Appellation: Fronsac
Grape variety: 80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc
Style: Versatile, good enough for dinner parties but also to open on Sunday afternoon watching the rugby.
Drinking window: now to 2025
Tasting note: I found this very silky and plush, smooth and juicy. I would be nice about this one as it is made by our very own winemaker so I will leave the commentary to Jancis Robinson – “excellent flavour…juicy. Smooth tannin..light body.
Chateau du Faure Haut Normand – 2018 – 3x75cl bottles
Appellation: Fronsac
Grape variety: 100% Merlot
Style: Well first off the label is fantastic! Not that such a thing changes the wine but it does look good on the table thanks Tom! The perfect Sunday lunch wine – try it with roast lamb…awesome.
Drinking window: You can drink it now but it will keep getting better and will still be improving in 10 years time
Tasting note: The high merlot grape content makes for a lovely smooth wine but the oak ageing has given it a structure almost like a Medoc. I think of blackberries and plums when I taste it but certainly it is a lush and deep wine that can cope with strong flavoured food.
Château La Dauphine – 2016 – 3x75cl bottles
Appellation: Fronsac
Grape variety: 80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc
Style: Everyday drinking but definitely good enough for friends and family
Drinking window: now to 2035-ish
Tasting note: Relatively high tannins makes it taste a bit like a left bank Margaux. If this has St Emilion or Pomerol on the label it would sell for €30 plus.
Château Haut Carles – 2016 – 3x75cl bottles
Appellation: Fronsac
Grape variety: 90% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 5% Malbec
Style: Very versatile, like any good Fronsac (and this is very good) it is ridiculously good value for the money so enjoy it yourself or blow away your friends.
Drinking window: now to 2035 (and beyond)
Tasting note: The Malbec, although small in quantity has a big impact making this much more powerful and heavier but with a fruity character that stops it being too heavy. Perfect match for duck, steak or lamb
